Extra Curricular

At BUCCLEUCH MONTESSORI, a great emphasis is placed on extra-curricular activities. We offer a wide variety of activities that contribute to the physical, emotional, mental and social development of every child. We believe that education is as much about what happens outside a classroom as what happens within. Our pupils continue to develop their growing sense of self confidence, and gain a wide variety of skills, be it through sports, music, dance and drama.

Art forms an integral part of our school curriculum. Our art department is truly inspiring, the children get to experience a wide variety of mediums and have the opportunity to create amazing artworks. A few of our children entered the Art Eisteddfod this year (2017) and all 59 entrants received an ‘A’ which put us well ahead of over 30 schools.

Update: 2020 – 30 Entries, nothing below an A

2021: 38 Entries – Results Pending

An integral part of the BUCCLEUCH MONTESSORI Preschool and Primary philosophy is ‘a healthy mind in a healthy body’.  At BUCCLEUCH MONTESSORI our sport has grown exponentially and competitively throughout the years. BUCCLEUCH MONTESSORI emphasises the importance of the creative arts as an integral part of every child’s complete development.

Each year we stage a spectacular professional musical production at the Barnyard theatre. Every single pupil at BUCCLEUCH MONTESSORI takes part in this spectacular stage-filling dancing, singing, instrumental and choir fest, while providing an outlet for developing talents. Our annual BUCCLEUCH MONTESSORI Revue showcases the depth of musical and dance talent in our school. Every pupil gets to learn multiple dance routines and the lyrics are sung by our choir. Performances to date have been ‘Music through the ages’, ‘The Heartbeat of Africa’ and ‘Nations of the World’. Our children perform in front of an audience of 600 which always ends in an encore! This gives our pupils enormous confidence on stage.

Music plays an integral role at BUCCLEUCH MONTESSORI. Every child from age 6 entering our Primary school learns how to read and write music and play a musical instrument. Our recorder groups consistently achieve ‘diploma’ certificates (the highest accolade) at eisteddfods and many of our students go on to play more complex instruments such as violin, piano, flute and guitar. Our musical talent has earned our pupils full scholarships to premier high schools.

We have two very talented choirs, namely a Junior and a Senior choir. Our children learn to sing from a very early age under the careful guidance of our very accomplished choir teacher. We regularly put on spectacular performances for our parents. We receive high accolades at eisteddfods for our very talented singers. Many of our choir members have been cherry picked for the Alimentum choir which plans to tour nationally.

Our children use computers as an extension to our cultural curriculum for both research and presentation purposes. They are expected to present each research project in class using power point. We follow the comprehensive ‘Computers for Kids’ curriculum which provides our children with an internationally recognised certificate and an ICDL rating (International Computer Driver’s License). We also introduce children to coding using Minecraft coding and Scratch applications.

Chess at BUCCLEUCH MONTESSORI is played during the children’s free time. We have three chess clubs, interestingly started by the children themselves from as young as 7-years old. Chess at our school is encouraged as it is proven to give children mental clarity and mental dexterity for solving problems. Children playing chess from an early age exhibit extraordinary memory skills. Chess is also known to improve concentration and academic performance of the child.

All our children go on camp annually, from 6-years old to 13-years old.

The Junior Primary goes to Camp Nelu where they get to enjoy the outdoors and interact with nature in a very safe, fun filled environment. Our young children particularly enjoy the freedom and independence our annual camps offer.

The Senior Primary group go to different camps annually which provide stimulating, challenging activities. The camp brings out the leadership qualities in each child as well as providing them with an opportunity to enjoy being with their friends and nature. Camps of choice are, Hadeda Camp in Parys where our children get to river raft, and navigate challenging obstacles in a beautiful setting.  Camp Zenith, which provides opportunities for our children to enjoy the outdoors and work collaboratively on challenging activities.

Community Days

Market Day is an entrepreneurial experience for all our Primary Children. They are given a budget of R200-00 where they need to recycle goods to produce items that they can sell. Each child from 6-years old is required to produce a business plan whereby they identify their market, do a costing exercise, produce the goods, sell them and work out their profit. 40% of the proceeds of the market go towards funding a facility that benefits all the children in the primary group such as upgrading the playground, buying outdoor umbrella’s, sports change rooms etc.

All parents and children at BUCCLEUCH MONTESSORI are invited to support our Market day entrepreneurs which always promises to be a highlight of each term.

Our annual sports day is the highlight of our athletics sports program. We have four sports houses at BUCCLEUCH MONTESSORI, namely: Impala (yellow), Springbok (red), Kudu (blue) and Sable (green). The day attracts our families who root for both their children and their houses. It is a fun filled occasion which has both parents and children competing for their houses. The winning house receives a trophy and each participant receives a beautiful medal.

Our ‘Musical Picnic’ is a family day whereby our talented children entertain our families by performing a variety of acts from choir and solo singing, dancing, playing musical instruments and miming for our families whilst our community enjoys a relaxing afternoon picnicking with their loved ones and socialising with each other.

At the end of every year, we graduate each of our children who pass from one plane of development to another. This is a very special occasion which attracts multiple family members. It is an occasion that requires our very talented choir and musicians to perform songs fitting for this very important occasion. Our toddlers graduate to preschool at 3-years old, our pre-schoolers graduate to Junior Primary at the end of their 3-year cycle in the Montessori environment usually at 6 – 7 years old and our senior children graduate to high school after having spent 12 years with us. This is a very special occasion and a very proud moment for all the staff who have had the honour of teaching these very accomplished graduates. Many of these graduates go on to premier high schools with full scholarships, a testimony to BUCCLEUCH MONTESSORI’s remarkable education standards, recognised by the high schools.

Our Senior Primary children (9-13 years) get to enjoy their ‘last blast’ with their graduating peers. This is an occasion where the children are allowed to have enormous fun together and socialise with each other. We provide a DJ and lots of music, the younger children get to decorate the hall as a surprise for their graduate friends. This is a well supervised occasion that is the highlight of the senior children’s social calendar.
